Appliance removal: what it costs and how it works

By Tyler BornsteinJune 14, 20267 min read
TL;DR

Appliance removal runs $90 to $250 depending on the size and weight of the appliance and whether stairs are involved. A single fridge or washer with ground-floor access is $90. A heavy appliance going down two flights is closer to $250. Text photos and your town to get a flat price within 24 hours.

Old fridge in the garage. Washer that died mid-cycle. Dryer that has been making a sound like a small helicopter for six months. You want them gone, and you do not want to wrestle them down the stairs yourself. Fair.

We haul appliances across 16 towns around Billerica, Massachusetts — from Lowell to Concord, Tewksbury to Acton. You text a few photos and your town, we send back one flat price within 24 hours. The crew loads it, hauls it, and sweeps up behind it. Same-day or next-day pickup is common.

What appliance removal actually costs

We price by volume and weight — how much space the appliance takes in the trailer and how heavy it is. A standard fridge or washer is one to two items, which puts it in the $90 range. A heavy appliance like a commercial-style range or an older top-loading washer with a concrete counterweight lands closer to $150 to $250.

Those numbers include the labor, the loading, the hauling, and the disposal. No hourly meter. No surprise charges when the truck pulls away.

If the appliance is going down stairs, the access add-ons apply: $40 for one flight, $80 for two or more. Ground floor, easy truck access — that is the base price.

Quotes carry about plus or minus 15 percent until we see the job in person. We say that out loud instead of springing it on you when the crew is already in the kitchen.

How the pickup works

You text us photos of the appliance and your town. We send back one flat price within 24 hours. Once you say yes, you pick a two-hour window, same day or next.

When the crew arrives:

  • We confirm the price matches the photos. If the appliance is heavier, bigger, or in a different spot than what the photos showed, we tell you before we touch it.
  • We protect the floors and walls. Appliance dollies and furniture pads go down in the path from the kitchen to the truck. We have seen what a fridge door handle does to a hallway wall in a Tewksbury split-level, and we would rather not repeat it.
  • We disconnect the appliance if it is not already disconnected. For gas ranges and dryers, we ask that the gas line be shut off before we arrive. We are not plumbers, but we can handle the disconnect itself in most cases.
  • We load the appliance onto the trailer. Most fridges and washers go out through a standard door. If it is a tight fit, the crew carries the tools to remove doors or panels.
  • We sweep the area. The spot where the fridge used to be should be cleaner than when we arrived.

Where the appliance goes

Old refrigerators and freezers contain refrigerant — usually R-134a or R-600a — that cannot be vented into the atmosphere. Massachusetts has required proper refrigerant recovery since the early 1990s under the Clean Air Act. We work with licensed recyclers who handle the recovery and break down the metal, plastic, and compressor oil.

Washers, dryers, and dishwashers are mostly metal. The steel drum in a washer alone is 20 to 30 pounds. Those go straight to a licensed metal recycler.

If the appliance still works — a fridge that cools, a washer that spins — we try to donate it first. Goodwill, Savers, and Habitat ReStore all take working appliances in our service area. A working fridge does not belong in a scrap yard.

Should you do it yourself or call someone

An appliance removal is a DIY job if you have a truck, a dolly, and a friend who owes you a favour. A standard fridge weighs 200 to 300 pounds. A top-loading washer is 150 to 200 pounds because of the concrete counterweight inside. If you have the truck and the muscle, the transfer-station fee in most of our towns runs $20 to $50 depending on weight. That beats our $90.

Here is where it gets harder: the basement fridge. Older homes in Lowell, Chelmsford, and Billerica often have a second fridge in the basement that has been there since the Clinton administration. Basements with narrow stairwells, low ceilings, and tight turns are where people earn that $90 — or regret trying to save it.

The other thing people do not think about is disposal. You cannot leave a fridge on the curb in most of our towns. Some require you to schedule a bulk pickup in advance. And refrigerators need proper refrigerant recovery — you cannot just drop one at the transfer station without the recycler handling it first. We handle that as part of the flat price.

When you should not call us

If the appliance still works and you just want it gone — try Facebook Marketplace or your town's Buy Nothing group first. A working fridge in decent condition will usually find a taker within a day or two in our area. You get it gone for free, someone else gets a fridge, and nothing goes to the scrap yard.

If you have a truck, a dolly, and the appliance is on the ground floor — the transfer station is cheaper. We will tell you that on the phone. We would rather lose the job than charge you for something you could do yourself on a Saturday morning.

If the appliance is still under warranty or the retailer offers free haul-away with a new purchase — take that deal. Most major appliance retailers include haul-away when you buy a replacement. Check before you call us.
